To explain why Acid Reflux is can vary from person to person, we need to look at what causes it.

The stomach is well designed to hold it's chemicals and it has a tough protective layer to prevent any irritation. Where the esophagus is connected to the stomach, there is a valve called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). This valve open to allow food to enter the stomach, and then closes to prevent any of the stomach contents passing back up into the esophagus.

In babies, the LES is not well developed and this is why they regularly reguritate food. By the time they are a year old, this will have stopped in a healthy child. For some people, that is the last time they will consider their LES and it will go on quietly protecting them from stomach acid.

The LES is not the only protection the body has against reflux. Gravity also plays an important part as long as we are upright and not lying down. Also, when our mouths produce saliva, it is alkaline and is the perfect antidote to stomach acids. Each time we swallow, our saliva washes any stray stomach acid back to where it belongs and it neutralises the tissues of the esophagus as it goes.

Some reflux is inevitable and everyone has some. Research has shown that sufferers from acid reflux are more sensitive to stomach chemicals than other people. The reasons behind this sensitivity are not yet understood.

So you can experience the symptoms of GERD and acid reflux because:

    You have too much acid in your stomach
    You have too little acid in your stomach
    Your LES is not working correctly
    Your esophagus is very sensitive to stomach acid
    Your stomach is not emptying properly
